No War on Iraq Lobby Day at Local Congressional Offices
UNITED FOR PEACE CALL TO ACTION: LET'S STOP BUSH'S WAR ON IRAQ
Monday September 30,
2002
Please help by organizing meetings or rallies at the local offices of senators and representatives on Monday September 30.
Within the next month, Congress is expected to vote on
whether or not to authorize a war against Iraq. We must convince our Representatives
and Senators that their constituents oppose a pre-emptive war against
Iraq.
For the day of September 30, we suggest that groups set up a meeting with
their local Senator or Representative (or with the legislative aide if
the representative is in DC), demanding that he/she sign on to a statement
opposing war with Iraq. For Congress members who have been staunchly pro-war,
we suggest a large, spirited anti-war rally outside the Congress member's
office. On the same day, national peace groups have called for a "NO WAR
ON IRAQ" lobbying day in Washington, DC.

"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes
so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't
even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears
and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've
got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run
it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will
be prevented from working at all!"
Mario Savio
"What we are talking about here - whether one wants to
recognize it or not, or call it by its proper name or not - is a form
of self-censorship. I worry that patriotism run amok will trample the
very values that the country seeks to defend."
"It's unpatriotic not to stand up, look them in the eye,
and ask the questions they don't want to hear - they being those who have
the responsibility, the ultimate responsibility in a society such as ours,
of sending our sons and daughters, our husbands, wives, our blood, to
face death, to take death..."

the UK Independent, 17 May 2002.
